To your left, the old woman is doing her puzzle. Her fingers, bent and knotted like tree roots, are as usual. She places a piece, then another, then another, as usual. But today, something is different. The puzzle doesn’t look as it normally does. The picture on the pieces isn’t the garden with the green grass, the flowers, the painfully bright blue sky. You lean in closer, squinting, and your heart beats in a new way, because instead you see something completely different.
The puzzle shows a man looking straight at you with wide open eyes. It’s as if he anticipated someone finding this picture eventually and wanted to get across the fact he was alive when the dogs began to eat him. The picture is blurry and dark, like it was taken in poor light by someone who shouldn’t have been taking pictures at all. And on one of his shoes, you can see something written with what could be pen or blood: “Floor 22.” You look at the jigsaw pieces all over the table, and the elderly woman’s crooked fingers fitting one in and then another. Slowly, and with a growing sense of dread, you understand the puzzle isn’t incomplete because she can’t finish it. She’s deliberately dismantling it.
